Zones of Regulation & Brain State Model
Zones of Regulation
The Zones of Regulation is a framework we use that develops awareness of feelings, energy and alertness levels while exploring a variety of tools and strategies for regulation, prosocial skills, self-care, and overall wellness. The zones of Regulation provide our children with an easy way to think and talk about how we feel on the inside and sort these feelings into four coloured Zones, all of which are expected in life. Once children understand their feelings and zones, they can learn to use tools and strategies to manage the different Zones in order to meet goals like doing schoolwork or other tasks, managing big feelings, and healthy relationships with others. The simple, common language and visual structure of The Zones of Regulation helps make the complex skill of regulation more concrete for our children and those who support them.
Brain States Model
Our Behaviour Curriculum along with our Character and Academic Curriculums support our children to be curious, happy learners who show our Character Habits. We meet the needs of our children through understanding children need to feel safe, loved and have a sense of belonging in order to learn.
Safe Spaces and Calm Areas
Childre have Safe Spaces and Calm Areas in their classrooms and other areas of the school that they can use when they need time to themselves or time to talk. In these areas, children are prompted to think about The Zones of Regulation and the Brain States Model to support them to regulate themselves.
Worry Boxes
We have Worry Boxes located in every classroom, in corridors and on playgrounds for children to write any worries they may have as well as speaking with their trusted adults. The worry boxes are checked daily.
